American Airlines Announces New Austin Admirals Club with Outdoor Terrace Feature

American Airlines has unveiled plans for a new premium lounge at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, marking another chapter in the carrier’s ongoing efforts to enhance passenger amenities at the Texas facility.

The Dallas-based airline revealed on Tuesday its intention to construct a fresh Admirals Club facility that will introduce an unprecedented feature to the carrier’s lounge portfolio: an outdoor terrace area.

The upcoming lounge will occupy approximately 12,000 square feet of space, representing a significant expansion that will be twice the size of the airline’s current Austin facility. Construction work is scheduled to commence later this year, according to the airline’s announcement.

Innovative Design Elements

The most distinctive aspect of the planned facility will be its open-air terrace, a feature that has never been incorporated into any existing American Airlines lounge. This outdoor space is expected to provide passengers with a unique relaxation environment while they await their flights.

Heather Garboden, American’s Chief Customer Officer, emphasized that the new facility will capture Austin’s distinctive character while delivering the sophisticated amenities that passengers have come to expect from the airline’s premium services.

During the construction period, the airline’s existing Austin lounge will continue operating to ensure uninterrupted service for eligible passengers.

Previous Plans and Market Dynamics

This announcement represents a renewed commitment to the Austin market, following a previous lounge project that was announced in 2021 but never materialized. That earlier plan involved a facility near Gate 14 in the Barbara Jordan Terminal, which was ultimately abandoned as American scaled back its rapid expansion in the Austin market.

Recent operational data indicates that American reduced its Austin flight schedule by 20% in the past year compared to 2024, though the airline still maintains significantly more service than it offered before the pandemic in 2019.

Airport Expansion Context

The new Admirals Club will be situated on the western section of the terminal, which is currently undergoing development as part of Austin-Bergstrom’s broader expansion initiative. The airline has not specified an exact opening timeline for the facility.

Austin’s aviation market has experienced substantial growth, driven partly by increased competition from Delta Air Lines, which has designated the Texas capital as one of its key focus cities. The airport previously hosted a Chase Sapphire Terrace lounge, though American’s new facility will be located in a different area.

Broader Lounge Strategy

This Austin project continues American’s recent pattern of lounge announcements and upgrades. In late 2024, airline executives promised a continuous rollout of lounge-related news, which has included plans for renovated facilities at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and Chicago O’Hare International Airport.

The outdoor terrace concept, while new for American Airlines, represents an innovative approach to lounge design that could potentially influence future facility developments across the carrier’s network.
