Adidas Launches Denim-Inspired Sneaker Collection Honoring 1994 USA Soccer Heritage
Adidas has unveiled a special footwear collection that pays homage to the United States Men’s National Soccer Team’s memorable denim-styled uniform from the 1994 World Cup. This new sneaker line transforms the controversial yet iconic jersey design into wearable footwear across three classic silhouettes.
The centerpiece of the collection is the Adidas Samba “USA Denim” model, which incorporates genuine denim material for the upper construction instead of simply printing the pattern. The design showcases light-colored star details scattered across the base, complemented by matching indigo suede on the toe area. White leather accents define the signature Three Stripes branding and eyestay elements, while red leather creates the distinctive mustache detail. The shoe sits atop a traditional translucent gum rubber outsole.
Similar design elements extend to the Superstar and Jabbar Hi models, though these versions eliminate the red accents in favor of an all-white approach for a cleaner aesthetic.
The historical significance of this collection traces back to 1994 when Adidas served as the official kit supplier for Team USA before Nike assumed that role the following year. Designer Peter Moore, who had previously created the legendary Air Jordan 1 during his tenure at Nike, conceptualized the original uniform. Moore selected the faux-denim aesthetic as a representation of America’s Western heritage for the tournament held on home soil.
Initially, the unconventional design faced widespread criticism and ridicule, including from the players who wore it. However, the uniform has experienced a cultural renaissance over the years, gaining appreciation as a bold and distinctive piece of soccer history.
The original away uniform featured a different design approach, utilizing wavy red and white striping to complete the American flag theme rather than the denim pattern.
This footwear release follows recent apparel collaborations that have revived the iconic jersey design. Earlier this year, a partnership with streetwear brand Bape produced a long-sleeve version featuring the brand’s logo in place of the original Team USA marking. Subsequently, Adidas released a short-sleeve iteration without any branding where the national team designation originally appeared.
The Adidas Samba, Superstar, and Jabbar Hi “USA Denim” models are currently available through Adidas’ official website and authorized retail partners. The collection is priced at $110 for both the Samba and Jabbar Hi models, while the Superstar retails for $120.
